MAKE SPAIN GREAT AGAIN. SPANISH WOMAN COLLECTION is a site-specific artwork that extends to the city by exhibiting a T-shirt collection in various souvenir shops in Granada.
Their designs reflect on Spanish traditions and customs, ironically associating them with the empowerment of the nation. Thus, a famous political slogan is transferred to a Spanish everyday sphere, where women, as habitual protagonists in the domestic space, bear the weight and obligation of tradition, demanding they 'lift the country' through their effort and sacrifice to maintain traditions.
The irony is further sharpened by adopting the aesthetics of souvenirs, launching a critique that questions the tourist gaze towards traditions and their convenient exploitation from a political standpoint, benefiting the economic realm.
The artwork includes words in Spanish, showing the relationship between language and the construction of Spanish identity, making evident the weight of the local and the difficulty it entails in translating to other languages and contexts.
The presence of the T-shirt collection in Granada's souvenir shops is announced through brochures and a QR code at the exhibition hall of the Faculty of Fine Arts, proposing a tour through the city center that invites us to have an 'in situ' experience, connecting these T-shirts with other souvenirs of Granada and activating our imaginary as consumers.
MAKE SPAIN GREAT AGAIN. SPANISH WOMAN COLLECTION is part of the international exhibition Culture Beat 2, a project of the International Academy Art Gallery Interchange Network included in the BAG 7: International Arts Festival, organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts of Granada in collaboration with the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization of the University of Granada. In this exhibition, artists from Spain, Chile, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Serbia and Uruguay invite to reflect on the sense of place and traditional cultures, exploring the parallels, confluences, differences and cultural singularities of the contexts represented.
